aptは「適切な」、optは「選ぶ」のイメージ
これらの意味の違いは、その成り立ちを知れば、はっきり見えてくる。
まずadaptの中にあるaptは、apt name（ふさわしい名前）のように「適切な、ふさわしい（＝suitable）」という意味を持つ形容詞。
つまりadaptは「適切な状態にする」から「適応させる」という意味を表すと考えておこう。
一方、adoptのoptは「選ぶ」という意味を持つ動詞（この名詞形がoption〔オプション、選択肢〕だ）。
「（何らかの方針や方法など）を採用する」とは、「自ら選んで取り入れる」ということ。だからoptという部分を含むadoptは「採用する」という意味になると覚えておこう。
